I started the Grumps series of pastel portraits when I had a vocal injury in 2014 and had to do two weeks of strict vocal rest – no talking, no singing. Each day I found a reference photo of a person making a facial expression that represented something I’d felt that day and drew it silently at my apartment. There are 20 grumps in total.
